Det ligger nordøst for Drachten og sydvest for Surhuisterveen, mellem Boelenslaan og Drachtstercompagnie. I 2021 havde landsbyen 900 indbyggere. Folgensterloane deles med Drachtstercompagnie, som også har de små samfund Luchtenveld og Scheiding. Houtigehage er opstået efter at moseområdet blev gravet ud i de sidste årtier af det 17. århundrede og i den første del af det 18. århundrede. Sådan opstod et fattigt hedeområde, hvorefter nogle mennesker fik jord til at kultivere. Det var ikke så nemt. Stednavnet skulle være afledt af de smalle stræk, som beboerne havde til at kultivere, og disse var stærkt bevokset med buske.
