Es liegt nordöstlich von Drachten und südwestlich von Surhuisterveen, zwischen Boelenslaan und Drachtstercompagnie. Im Jahr 2021 hatte das Dorf 900 Einwohner. Die Folgensterloane wird mit Drachtstercompagnie geteilt, ebenso mit den Nachbarschaften Luchtenveld und Scheiding. Houtigehage entstand, nachdem im letzten Jahrzehnt des 17. Jahrhunderts und im ersten Teil des 18. Jahrhunderts das Moor abgebaut wurde. So entstand ein verarmtes Heidegebiet, in dem einige Menschen Land erhielten, um es zu kultivieren. Das war nicht so einfach. Der Ortsname soll von den schmalen Streifen abgeleitet sein, die die Bewohner zur Kultivierung hatten, und diese waren stark mit Sträuchern bewachsen.
