Si trova a nord-est di Drachten e a sud-ovest di Surhuisterveen, tra Boelenslaan e Drachtstercompagnie. Nel 2021 il villaggio contava 900 abitanti. La Folgensterloane è condivisa con Drachtstercompagnie, con anche i villaggi di Luchtenveld e Scheiding. Houtigehage è nato dopo che negli ultimi decenni del XVII secolo e nella prima parte del XVIII la torba è stata estratta. Così si è creato un'area brulla di erica dopo che alcune persone hanno ottenuto terreni da coltivare. Non è stato affatto facile. Il nome del luogo deriverebbe dalle strette strisce che i residenti avevano per coltivare, e queste erano fortemente coperte di cespugli.
