Se encuentra al noreste de Drachten y al suroeste de Surhuisterveen, entre Boelenslaan y Drachtstercompagnie. En 2021, el pueblo contaba con 900 habitantes. La Folgensterloane se comparte con Drachtstercompagnie, con las aldeas de Luchtenveld y Scheiding. Houtigehage se originó después de que en las últimas décadas del siglo XVII y en la primera parte del XVIII se excavara el turba. Así se creó un área de brezos empobrecida, después de lo cual algunas personas obtuvieron tierras para cultivarlas. No fue tan fácil. El nombre del lugar se deriva de las estrechas franjas que los habitantes tenían para cultivar, las cuales estaban fuertemente cubiertas de arbustos.
