Gennem tørvudvinding i det udstrakte og lavtliggende vaskerområde blev Langeraarse Plassen dannet her i det 16. århundrede, som består af tre søer adskilt af tørvdigekanter: Zuidplas (ca. 65 ha), Noord- eller Oostplas (ca. 65 ha) og Geerplas (ca. 35 ha). Tørvdigekanterne (eller tørvkantene) opstod, fordi de relativt smalle strækninger, der blev brugt som vej, ikke blev opdyrket. Søerne er forbundet med hinanden, selvom forbindelsen mellem Noordplas og Geerpolder Plas på nuværende tidspunkt er afbrudt på grund af eksperimenter for at forbedre vandkvaliteten.
