Vandveje har været af afgørende betydning for udviklingen af Hilversum. Ved anlæggelsen af 's-Graveland blev der gravet en sejladsvej i retning mod Hilversum. Omkring 1650 opstod en havn i slutningen af den nuværende Vaartweg. Gennem denne Gooise Vaart var der en vandvej til Vecht. Sejladsvejen blev gravet videre, og ved slutningen af det 19. århundrede var sejlløbet udvidet frem til Havenstraat, hvor den gamle havn opstod. Gennem dette losseplads kom der især mange byggematerialer til Hilversum.
