Les voies navigables ont été essentielles au développement de Hilversum. Lors de la création de 's-Graveland, une voie navigable a été creusée en direction de Hilversum. Vers 1650, un port est apparu à la fin de l'actuelle Vaartweg. Par cette Gooise Vaart, il y avait une voie d'eau vers la Vecht. La voie navigable a été approfondie et à la fin du 19ème siècle, la voie avait progressé jusqu'à Havenstraat où le Vieux Port est apparu. Par ce site de déchargement, de nombreux matériaux de construction arrivaient à Hilversum.
