Le vie d'acqua sono state essenziali per lo sviluppo di Hilversum. Nella costruzione di 's-Graveland è stata scavata una via navigabile in direzione di Hilversum. Intorno al 1650 è nato un porto alla fine dell'attuale Vaartweg. Attraverso questo Gooise Vaart c'era una via d'acqua verso la Vecht. La via navigabile è stata ulteriormente scavata e alla fine del XIX secolo la navigazione era avanzata fino a Havenstraat dove è nato il Porto Vecchio. Attraverso questo punto di carico sono arrivati principalmente molti materiali da costruzione a Hilversum.
