Waterwegen zijn voor de ontwikkeling van Hilversum van essentieel belang geweest. Bij de aanleg van 's-Graveland werd een vaarweg doorgegraven in de richting van Hilversum. Rond 1650 ontstond een haven aan het einde van de huidige Vaartweg. Via deze Gooise Vaart was er een waterweg naar de Vecht. De vaarweg werd verder gegraven en aan het eind van de 19e eeuw was de vaart gevorderd tot aan de Havenstraat waar de Oude Haven ontstond. Via deze losplaats kwamen vooral veel bouwmaterialen naar Hilversum.
