Smukt Gaasterland blev bygget i 1912 på opdrag af Maatschappij Gaasterland af den Haagenske arkitekt M.J. van der Schilden. Han designede bygningen i en stil, hvor der er indarbejdet elementer fra chaletstilen. I 1925 blev villaen købt af den Utrechtiske Fond for Folkesundhed for at fungere som et børneferiekoloniehus.
