Gennem århundrederne har området 'Gat van den Ham' været underlagt forandringer fra natur og mennesker. Det nuværende kreksystem er en rest af opfyldningen i det 16. århundrede. For at forbedre natur, landbrug, vandopbevaring og kulturhistorie er der i de seneste år foretaget betydelige ændringer, såsom etableringen af ny natur og sumpede områder omkring kreks. Derudover er stykker landbrugsjord blevet inddraget i skoven.
