Slættelandet Leersumse Veld er dannet af smeltevand fra isen i den næstsidste istid. Gennem afskovning og overbevægning er der over tid opstået et hedeområde med flyvesand. Spor af dette findes stadig i området på den sydøstlige side af Leersumse Veld. Naturområdet omfatter nu vekslende skove og hede og tre små søer, Leersumse Plassen. Heden bliver græsset af en flok piemontesiske køer for at forhindre græsning og tilgroning af heden. En smuk allé og gamle rhododendronbuske er rester fra en tidligere herregård. Statskog er ejer af Leersumse Veld og har indrettet et behageligt hvilested i Veldschuur med information om området.
