Die Ebene des Leersumse Veld entstand durch Schmelzwasser des Gletschers in der vorletzten Eiszeit. Durch Abholzung und Überweidung entwickelte sich im Laufe der Zeit ein Heidelandschaft mit Sanddünen. Reste davon sind noch im Gebiet an der Südostseite des Leersumse Veld zu finden. Das Naturschutzgebiet umfasst jetzt abwechslungsreiche Wälder und Heideflächen sowie drei Gewässer, die Leersumse Plassen. Die Heide wird von einer Herde piemontesischer Kühe beweidet, um Vergrasung und das Zuwachsen der Heide zu verhindern. Eine schöne Allee und alte Rhododendronsträucher sind Überbleibsel eines früheren Landsitzes. Der Staatsforstbetrieb ist Eigentümer des Leersumse Veld und hat im Veldschuur einen angenehmen Ruhepunkt eingerichtet, der Informationen über das Gebiet bietet.
