Vesting Bourtange kaldes også fæstningen, der aldrig blev indtaget. Opgaven med at bygge en første forstærkning af en vigtig passage gennem sumpen blev i 1580 givet af ingen ringere end Wilhelm af Oranien. Fæstningen nåede sin største omkreds i 1742. Informationscentret (indgangsbygningen til fæstningen) er en base for dit besøg på fæstningen. Udover en kort visuel introduktion til fæstningens historie kan du finde information om det nuværende Bourtange der. Fæstningen Bourtange er åben hele året. Restauranterne og butikkerne har deres egne åbningstider. Der opkræves entré til museerne i fæstningen Bourtange. Kombinationsbilletter til museerne kan købes i informationscentret.
