Bourtange Fortress is also referred to as the fortress that was never taken. The commission for the construction of an initial reinforcement of an important passage through the swamp was issued in 1580 by none other than William of Orange. The fortress reached its largest extent in 1742. The information center (entrance building of the fortress) serves as a base for your visit to the fortress. In addition to a brief visual introduction to the history of the fortress, you will find information about present-day Bourtange there. Bourtange Fortress is open year-round. The restaurants and shops have their own opening hours. An entry fee is required for the museums of Bourtange Fortress. Combination tickets for the museums are available at the information center.
