Ved åbningen af Maasbroen i 1929 var Grave blevet den østlige port til Brabant, og den nuværende provinciale vej 324 var dengang hovedvejen, der forbandt Nijmegen og 's-Hertogenbosch. Bygningen af Mariakapellet langs denne vej blev inspireret af en prædiken sendt via radioen den 30. april 1946 af kapelan Hermus fra Sint-Jans-katedralen i Den Bosch om Mariabilledet, der vogter i vestlige Brabant ved Moerdijk, og Vor Frue, der spreder sine bekymringer fra Sint-Jans-katedralen. Efter at have hørt prædikenen konkluderede frater Rudolph fra Blindelinstituttet i Grave og Piet Pennings, formand for den Katolske Arbejderbevægelse (KAB), uafhængigt, at der også i øst skulle findes et Mariabillede, der vogtede over indgangen til provinsen.
