Pim Fortuyn var aktivt medlem af PvdA indtil 1989 og blev senere medlem af VVD, men blev kendt som spidskandidat for først Leefbaar Nederland og derefter sin egen Lijst Pim Fortuyn i opløbet til folketingsvalget i 2002. Fortuyn blev i maj 2002 myrdet af Volkert van der Graaf på Media Park i Hilversum, ni dage før en forudset stor sejr for LPF ved valget.
Stichting Beeld van Pim organiserer årligt en mindehøjtidelighed på dødsdagen for Fortuyn. På en bustur besøges forskellige steder, herunder Fortuyns hus, Mediapark i Hilversum og statuen af Fortuyn på Korte Hoogstraat i Rotterdam. Denne statue er designet af Corrie Ammerlaan. Den 6. maj 2012, præcist ti år efter mordet på Fortuyn, blev delen af Korte Hoogstraat, hvor statuen står, omdøbt til Pim Fortuynplaats.
