Mercatorpladsen har en klar forbindelse med kartografen Mercator, for på pladsen står en stor verdensklode tegnet. Et bedre symbol for denne multikulturelle region af byen kunne man ikke forestille sig. Når du går over pladsen, ser du ikke så meget af det, men når du står på det hævede 'øre' af pladsen, ser du kortet tydeligt tegnet. Og man har endda brugt Mercator-projektionen!
