The Mercatorplein has a clear link with the cartographer Mercator, as there is a large world globe drawn on the square. One could not think of a better symbol for this multicultural region of the city. When you walk across the square, you don't see much of it, but when you stand on the raised 'ear' of the square, you can clearly see the map drawn. And they even used the Mercator projection!
