Der Mercatorplatz hat eine klare Verbindung zum Kartographen Mercator, denn auf dem Platz steht eine große Weltkugel. Ein besseres Symbol für diese multikulturelle Region der Stadt könnte man sich nicht vorstellen. Wenn man über den Platz läuft, sieht man nicht viel davon, aber wenn man auf dem erhöhten 'Ohr' des Platzes steht, sieht man die Karte deutlich gezeichnet. Und man hat sogar die Mercatorprojektion verwendet!
