Oude-Tonge har lidt alvorligt under vandflommen i 1953. I natten fra 31. januar til 1. februar omkom 305 mennesker her.
Efter oversvømmelsen gav det svenske Røde Kors et antal træhuse. Disse huse blev dengang placeret på Julianastraat i Oude-Tonge.
I 2007 blev et stort antal af disse huse revet ned, men før det blev der genopført boliger og lejligheder i svensk stil af den lokale boligforening.
