Goedereede har siden det 14. århundrede bogstaveligt talt været en god havn (ankerssted) for havgående skibe. Goedereede fik allerede i 1312 byrettigheder og er stadig den eneste by på Goeree-Overflakkee. Senere begyndte havnen at mudre til, og i det 18. århundrede lå havnebreden helt uden for byen. Det betød slutningen på Goedereede som en livlig og velstående handelsby. Men med sine smalle gader, smukke gamle huse og intime havn har Goedereede stadig intet mistet i charme.
Den eneste hollandske pave - utrechtianeren Adriaan Boelens (2. marts 1459 – 14. september 1523), Adrianus VI - boede i en periode i Goedereede. Hans bolig er nu hotel/restauranten De Gouden Leeuw.
