Goedereede war seit dem 14. Jahrhundert buchstäblich ein guter Hafen (Ankerplatz) für Seeschiffe. Goedereede erhielt bereits 1312 Stadtrechte und ist bis heute die einzige Stadt auf Goeree-Overflakkee. Später begann der Hafen zu verlanden und im 18. Jahrhundert lag die Hafenmündung vollständig außerhalb des Städtchens. Das bedeutete das Ende von Goedereede als lebendige und wohlhabende Handelsstadt. Doch mit seinen engen Gassen, wunderschönen alten Häusern und dem intimen Hafen hat Goedereede nichts von seinem Charme eingebüßt.
Der einzige niederländische Papst - der Utrechter Adriaan Boelens (2. März 1459 – 14. September 1523), Adrian VI - hat einige Zeit in Goedereede gelebt. Sein Wohnhaus ist nun das Hotel/Restaurant De Gouden Leeuw.
