I 1918 blev den Kongelige Hollandske Saltindustri grundlagt i Boekelo, en forgænger for AkzoNobel. Virksomheden fik i 1933 concession til også at bore efter salt ved Hengelo. Året efter blev den første boreplatform installeret for at pumpe vandet ud af saltlagene. I begyndelsen af 1935 kom det første salt op af jorden, og i 1936 blev der bygget et saltfabrik nær Twentekanaal. Af de halvtreds tårne, der blev bygget i årene efter, er der syv tilbage. Tre af dem har fået status som monumenter. Tårnene var i brug indtil 1963, hvorefter de blev erstattet af lave pumpestuer.
