Nel 1918 fu fondata a Boekelo l'Industria Salina Olandese Reale, un precursore di AkzoNobel. L'azienda ottenne nel 1933 la concessione per perforare alla ricerca di sale anche a Hengelo. L'anno successivo fu installata la prima torre di perforazione, per pompare l'acqua dalle strati salini. All'inizio del 1935 venne estratto il primo sale e nel 1936 fu costruita una fabbrica di sale vicino al canale di Twente. Delle ottanta torri costruite negli anni successivi, sette sono rimaste. Tre di esse hanno ricevuto lo status di monumento. Le torri sono state utilizzate fino al 1963, dopodiché furono sostituite da piccoli edifici per le pompe.
