Drilling Tower 27 Hengelo

In 1918, the Royal Dutch Salt Industry was established in Boekelo, a precursor to AkzoNobel. In 1933, the company was granted a concession to drill for salt near Hengelo. The following year, the first drill tower was installed to pump water from the salt layers. In early 1935, the first salt was extracted from the ground, and in 1936, a salt factory was built near the Twente Canal. Of the eighty towers built in the years that followed, seven remain. Three of them have been designated as monuments. The towers were in use until 1963; they were replaced by low pumping stations.
