Det naturlige lavland blev dannet i den forrige istid af smeltende is i lidt varmere perioder. På våde steder er der i løbet af århundreder dannet mose. For ca. 6000 år siden slog mennesker sig ned her. Gennem skovrydning og overgræsning blev Leersumse Veld til et område med loose sand og heden. For to århundreder siden blev mosen udgravet for tørv. Dette førte til dannelsen af Leersumse Plassen.
