La naturale depressione è stata formata nell'ultima glaciazione dalla fusione dei ghiacci durante i periodi più caldi. In luoghi umidi, nel corso dei secoli, si è formato del torba. Circa 6000 anni fa, gli uomini si stabilirono qui. A causa della deforestazione e del sovrapascolo, il Leersumse Veld divenne una zona di sabbie mobili e brughiera. Due secoli fa, la torba venne estratta per ottenere il carbo. Da ciò sono nate le Leersumse Plassen.
