Blå åbnede den 28. februar 1998; initiativerne var Kjell Einar Karlsen og Martin Revheim. Det er beliggende i en fabriksbygning tæt på Akerselva, en flod der løber gennem centrum. Darwin Porter fra Frommer's beskriver klubben som "den førende jazzklub i Oslo. Mørk og industriel, med masser af smedejern og blødt lys, booker dette sted nogle af de bedste jazzacts i verden. Publikum er en blanding af unge og gamle, klædt i afslappet, men sofistikeret påklædning." På trods af dette har klubben også præsenteret andre musikgenrer, såsom pop, rock, elektronisk og hip-hop.
