Blå è stata inaugurata il 28 febbraio 1998; i fondatori sono stati Kjell Einar Karlsen e Martin Revheim. Si trova in un edificio industriale vicino all'Akerselva, un fiume che scorre attraverso il centro. Darwin Porter di Frommer's descrive il club come "il miglior club jazz di Oslo. Scuro e industriale, con molto ferro battuto e luci soffuse, questo posto ospita alcuni dei migliori artisti jazz del mondo. Il pubblico è una miscela di giovani e anziani, vestiti in modo informale ma sofisticato." Nonostante ciò, il club ha ospitato anche altri generi musicali, come pop, rock, elettronica e hip-hop.
