Byen opstod omkring godset Quinta de Amoreira da Gândara, som første gang nævnes i et dokument fra 24. november 1495 af nonnerne fra klostret Santa Clara i Coimbra, som havde ansvaret for området. Den nuværende by omtales første gang officielt i byretsdokumentet fra Sangalhos den 20. august 1514.
I 1928 blev Amoreira da Gândara en selvstændig kommune ved at blive udskilt fra kommunen Sangalhos.
