Il comune sorse attorno al podere Quinta de Amoreira da Gândara, menzionato per la prima volta in un documento del 24 novembre 1495 delle monache del monastero di Santa Clara di Coimbra, a cui era soggetta la zona. Il luogo attuale viene menzionato ufficialmente per la prima volta nel documento di concessione del diritto di città di Sangalhos del 20 agosto 1514.
Nel 1928 Amoreira da Gândara divenne un comune autonomo, distaccandosi dal comune di Sangalhos.
