Der Wiener Zentralfriedhof wurde 1874 eröffnet und zählt mit einer Fläche von fast zweieinhalb Quadratkilometern und rund 330.000 Grabstellen mit rund drei Millionen Verstorbenen zu den größten Friedhofsanlagen Europas. Er wurde im Laufe seiner Geschichte insgesamt sieben Mal erweitert, zuletzt 1921. Zum Zeitpunkt seiner Eröffnung galt er als größter Europas. Nach Bestatteten gilt dies bis heute, flächenmäßig größer sind hingegen der vier Quadratkilometer umfassende Friedhof Ohlsdorf in Hamburg und Brookwood Cemetery nahe London. Der Zentralfriedhof gehört aufgrund seiner vielen Ehrengräber, der Jugendstil-Bauwerke und des weitläufigen Areals zu den besonderen Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt Wien.
