Holzschlag liegt im südlichen Burgenland in der Gemeinde Unterkohlstätten genau am Übergang der Alpen zum pannonischen Tiefland.
Die erste schriftliche Erwähnung von Holzschlag fällt auf das Jahr 1634. Die Entstehung der Siedlung dürfte mit dem damaligen Glashandwerk in der Region zu tun haben. Da die Glasproduktion große Mengen an Holz verschlang, wurde dieses, damals reichlich vorhanden, durch Abholzung der Wälder in unmittelbarer Nähe der Glashütten bereitgestellt. Auf einer der gerodeten Waldflächen wurde dann eine Siedlung errichtet – daher der Name „Holzschlag“. Von 1659 bis 1854 war die Ortschaft die überwiegende Zeit Teil der Herrschaft Pinkafeld.
