Während des Ersten Weltkriegs war der deutsche Besatzungsverband überaus besorgt über Spionage. Zu Beginn des Krieges mussten die Brieftauben drinnen gehalten werden. Ende 1914 sammelte die Besatzung im Brüsseler Jubelpark 75.000 Tauben, um sie dann alle zu töten. Dutzende Taubenzüchter, für die ihre Vögel alles bedeuteten, begingen Selbstmord.
