Durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, el ocupante alemán estaba extremadamente preocupado por el espionaje. Al principio de la guerra, las palomas mensajeras debían ser mantenidas dentro. A finales de 1914, el ocupante reunió 75,000 palomas en el parque Jubel de Bruselas para luego matarlas todas. Decenas de criadores de palomas, para quienes sus aves lo significaban todo, se suicidaron.
