Die Benediktinerabtei Affligem wurde 1083 gegründet. Nach ihrer Zerstörung während der Französischen Revolution nahmen die überlebenden Mönche ihr klösterliches Leben in Termonde wieder auf. Die Abtei wurde 1869 an ihrem ursprünglichen Standort wieder aufgebaut. Im Jahr 1956 brauten die Mönche dort noch Bier. Dieses wurde anschließend von einer kommerziellen Brauerei hergestellt. Die Affligem-Biere der Brauerei Affligem (Heineken) werden lizenziert in Opwijk gebraut. Die Brüder erhalten Tantiemen für die verkauften Biere.
