De Benedictijnerabdij van Affligem werd opgericht in 1083. Na de vernietiging tijdens de Franse Revolutie hervatten de overlevende monniken hun monastieke leven in Termonde. De abdij werd in 1869 op dezelfde locatie herbouwd. In 1956 brouwden de monniken er nog steeds bier. Dit werd daarna geproduceerd door een commerciële brouwerij. De Affligem-bieren van brouwerij Affligem (Heineken) worden onder licentie gebrouwen in Opwijk. De broeders ontvangen royalty's op de verkochte bieren.
