The Benedictine Abbey of Affligem was founded in 1083. After its destruction during the French Revolution, the surviving monks resumed their monastic life in Termonde. The abbey was rebuilt on its former site in 1869. In 1956, the monks were still brewing beer there. This was later produced by a commercial brewery. Affligem beers from the Affligem brewery (Heineken) are brewed under license in Opwijk. The brothers receive royalties on the beers sold.
