La abadía benedictina de Affligem fue fundada en 1083. Después de su destrucción durante la Revolución francesa, los monjes supervivientes retomaron su vida monástica en Termonde. La abadía fue reconstruida en su antiguo lugar en 1869. En 1956, los monjes todavía elaboraban cerveza allí. Esta fue luego fabricada por una cervecería comercial. Las cervezas Affligem de la cervecería Affligem (Heineken) se elaboran bajo licencia en Opwijk. Los hermanos perciben regalías sobre las cervezas vendidas.
