Das Vloetemveld erstreckt sich über Snellegem (170 ha) und Zedelgem (110 ha), von denen 113 ha Waldgebiet und der Rest militärisches Gelände ist. Einst war Vloetem ein sumpfiges, morastiges Stück Heide, im Besitz des Grafen von Flandern. 1296 schenkte Gwijde von Dampierre das Gut dem Brügger Sint-Janshospitaal. Viele Jahrhunderte später bestellten die Hospitalbrüder das Gebiet zu fruchtbarem Ackerland. Ein Deich musste das Wasser aufhalten, damit das Gebiet dahinter kultiviert werden konnte. Vor dem Deich entstanden zahlreiche Teiche, die zwischen 1770 und 1882 zugeschüttet und bewaldet wurden, hauptsächlich mit Kiefer. 1796 wurde das Vloetemveld an das OCMW von Brügge übertragen. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg wurde der größte Teil vom Verteidigungsministerium für den Bau eines Munitionslagers enteignet. 1980 wurde der verbleibende Teil von Wasser und Wäldern gekauft.
