Um den Heldenplatz von Ham offiziell einzuweihen, wurde das Menneke als Statue errichtet. Offiziell genannt „Der brave Bürger“. Es sollte etwas von den Einwohnern selbst sein. Es sollte ein friedlicher und dennoch fröhlicher Kerl sein. Ein Einwohner von Ham ist stolz, bescheiden, ruhig und angenehm. All dies ist im braven Bürger verkörpert. Außerdem sieht jeder eine Ähnlichkeit mit seinem/ihrem Großvater.
