Berühmte Bewohner des Graziewaldes waren die Bande von Jan Praet, die tagsüber von Haus zu Haus verkauften und nachts Überfälle auf Häuser verübten, in denen sie tagsüber gewesen waren. Man überfiel auch Passanten im Wald. Der Name des Waldes stammt aus dieser Zeit, denn die Räuber beraubten die Passanten ohne Gnade. Bis ins 18. Jahrhundert war der Graziewald ein großer und weitläufiger Wald, von der Kouter in Zele bis tief nach Overmere.
