Zugehörig zur äußeren Festungsgürtel, der sogenannten Hauptverteidigungsstellung rund um Antwerpen, war der Bau des Forts, der 1908 begonnen wurde, zum Zeitpunkt des Ausbruchs des Ersten Weltkriegs noch nicht vollständig abgeschlossen. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg verlor das Fort von Liezele seine militärische Funktion; aufgrund des naturwissenschaftlichen Wertes durch die reiche Flora mit unter anderem dem Vorhandensein seltener Pflanzen wurde das Fort mit seiner Umgebung als Landschaft mit kleinem Tierpark und Fledermausreservat (Nordostflügel) geschützt.
