Belonging to the outer ring of forts, the so-called Main Defensive Position around Antwerp, the construction of the fort, which started in 1908, was not yet fully completed at the outbreak of the First World War. After the Second World War, Fort Liezele lost its military function; due to its scientific value from the rich flora, including the presence of rare plants, the fort and its surroundings were protected as a landscape with a small animal park and bat reserve (northeast wing).
