Das Buitenland ist ein eingedeichtes Gebiet, das sich aufgrund des Weidenanbaus (Weiden) und der Korbflechterei zu einem Wohnkern entwickelte. Dieser bemerkenswerte Name stammt von der Eindeichung. Durch das Errichten von Deichen wurde das Wasser nach außen gedrängt. Alles, was sich zwischen den Scheldedeichen und der Schelde befindet, liegt außerhalb der Deiche.
