Laut einer Überlieferung fischten Einwohner des Weilers Molenstede die Statue von "Unsere Liebe Frau von Diest" aus der Demer, während sie aufrecht nach Diest trieb.
"Die Guten Leute von Moelstede" erhielten daher seit 1488 das Vorrecht, die Statue bei der jährlichen Prozession in Diest zu tragen.
Die aus diesem Brauch entstandene Unsere-Liebe-Frau-Gilde ist die erste bekannte Vereinigung von Molenstede. Diese Legende lieferte die Inspiration für diese Statue.
