Volgens een overlevering visten inwoners van het gehucht Molenstede het beeld van "Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Diest" op uit de Demer terwijl het rechtstaand naar Diest dreef.
"De Goede Lieden van Moelstede" kregen daarom sinds 1488 het voorrecht het beeld te dragen in de jaarlijkse ommegang te Diest.
De Onze-Lieve-Vrouwgilde, die uit dit gebruik ontstond, is de eerste bekende vereniging van Molenstede. Deze legende leverde de inspiratie voor dit beeld.
