Dies ist ein seltsamer Pilz ohne Stiel, der am liebsten auf alten oder toten Bäumen wächst. Der Pilz ist nicht essbar. Aus dem Zunderschwamm stellte man früher Zunderkästen her. Dies ist ein Vorgänger des Streichholzes. Es war eine Schachtel, deren Inhalt aus Zunder bestand, einem leicht entflammbaren Material. Dies konnte zum Beispiel ein Stück getrockneter Zunderschwamm sein.
