Este es un hongo extraño sin tallo que prefiere crecer en árboles viejos o muertos. El hongo no es comestible. De la hongo de yesca se hacían antiguamente cajas de yesca. Este es un precursor del fósforo. Era una caja cuya contenido consistía en yesca, un material de fácil combustión. Esto podría ser, por ejemplo, un trozo de hongo de yesca seco.
